First Impressions: Palm Pre

leave a comment »

Found a working Pre at Costco last weekend and played with it for a while. Here are my first impressions.

  • Universal Search is pretty nice
  • Multitasking between apps is great
  • Easy to use, everything is pretty straight forward
  • Bigger screen than I expect ited to have
  • Great UI

  • Transition between apps are choppy
  • Pinch zooming in and out of pictures is also choppy
  • Could not get to the lock screen, there’s a lock screen right?
  • Keyboard is impossible to use, probably will need some getting used to
  • Touch screen response is slower than the iPhone
  • Very limited apps, although I know more apps are coming soon

Overall I think the Palm Pre still has a long way to go before it can actually compete with the iPhone. It’s a nice phone, but the features are just so limited. And when Palm releases a weak SDK like this, it’s impossible to see this thing reach a level anywhere near an iPhone, or any Android handset. (Speaking of which, I still haven’t gotten the chance to play with any Android phones.) The advertisements from Bell also seem really crappy as well, I don’t see a lot of ads out there promoting the Pre.

For now, only time will tell, on the fate of the Palm Pre.
